As far back as the old men and women can remember, tattooing has been a tribal custom of the coastal peoples of Papua New Guinea. Among the Motu, Waima, Aroma, Hula, Mekeo, Mailu and other related southwestern groups, women were heavily tattooed from head to toe, while men displayed chest markings related to their exploits in the headhunt. By World War II, however, tattooing traditions largely disappeared in these areas and today only the Maisin and a few neighboring peoples of Collingwood Bay in southeastern Papua remain as the last coastal people to continue tattooing itself.

Tattoos were generally inked upon women in a fixed order among all coastal Papuans. First, girls between five and seven years of age were tattooed on the backs of hands to the elbows and from the elbows to the shoulders. Girls between seven and eight were tattooed on the face and lower abdomen, the vulva and up to the navel, then the waist down to the knees and the outside of the thighs. At ten, the armpits and areas extending to the nipples were tattooed with the throat done shortly thereafter. When puberty approached, the back from the shoulders down, then the buttocks, back of the thighs and legs were marked. When ready for marriage, V-shaped designs from the neck down to the navel were tattooed. Sometimes, special tattoos could be added if the father, brother, or close relative of the girl killed another man, or if they showed prowess in fishing or trading expeditions. All of these markings were ritualistic, and in some cases erotic. If a girl did not have them, she was not acceptable for marriage.

Friday Munchies: Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies

Ingredients: (makes 8 big cookies, 10 medium, 12 small)
1/2 cup sugar (or a lil bit less for less sweetness)
1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 egg beaten
1/2 cocoa
Grease paper + Flat Oven Tray

Method:
Preheat oven to 180 degrees celsius (for a fan forced oven) 200 for normal
Mix sugar, peanut butter, baking powder and egg together
Add cocoa and mix well
Place grease paper onto oven tray and spoon out mixture onto tray
Bake for 8-10 mins

Pitchfork: What kind of rap music did you listen to growing up?

Azealia Banks: Just the commercial stuff-- I was more into musical theater and Broadway and jazz and voice lessons and going on auditions. But once I tried getting in commercials and all that weird shit I realized that wasn't what I wanted to do. I wanted to be on stages. So I started fucking around with rap. Remember that remix of [Shawty Lo's] "Dey Know" with Weezy on it? That verse right there made me wanna rap, it seemed like so much fun.

Pitchfork: I feel like a lot of rappers might think musicals are corny.

AB: I guess so, but they're really fun to watch. And rap and musicals are congruent in that they're both trying to tell a story or convey a message. I still like singing way more than rapping; rapping is more like a nice tool or accessory for writing songs.

Pitchfork: You're about to sign with a label, but you've gotten pretty far without one. Have you considered a more independent route?

AB: Yeah, but for how I want to do this thing-- and I don't even really know what the fuck "this thing" is yet-- but considering how ambitious my ideas are musically, I definitely need a label that will really get it out there. I'm not really scared of major labels. I just want to work where I'm allowed to make mistakes and do my own thing rather than get into a situation where someone else has their own agenda of what they want me to be.

Pitchfork: Have you started recording your next release?

AB: Yeah. I'm moving to London next month, and me and Paul Epworth are going to bang this shit out. He's doing the whole thing. The idea is to make it fun-- not like a musical, but event-ful-- so it's not just me rapping over beats. I want to make it sound polished, because a lot of my shit that's out sounds kind of bootleg. [laughs] I'm most excited about this one song called "Licorice" that's sort of about interracial dating. I want to make feel-good music.

Pitchfork: Is it going to be a proper album or a free mixtape?

AB: Because I'm finding a label and it's becoming much bigger than I thought it would be, the ideas is: If you can make an album, maybe you don't want to give it away for free. Not to be on some "fuck you, pay me" shit, but it just makes sense. That way you can license the beats and you can own it, and other people can own it, too. I have a big feeling-- and so does Paul Epworth and everyone around me-- that this is going to be classic, in a sense. And even if it's not classic, it's going to be really interesting for music. I think. I hope. [laughs]

FACE 101: INTRO TO MAKEUP, PART 1

On a daily basis I meet women who, for various reasons, opt not to wear any makeup on a daily basis. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Not even a coat of mascara, and barely a swipe of lipgloss. Some say that they don’t have time, and rush to make it out of the house and to work every morning. Others are afraid of looking too cakey or made-up, and opt instead for a fresh face. But more often then not, I’m hearing from women who simply have never learned the basics of makeup products and application, and have no idea where to begin!

Taking myself and my personal love for cosmetics out of the equation, I can understand how overwhelming the world of makeup may seem for a newbie. Walking up to a makeup counter in a department store, or even down the beauty aisle at at CVS, there are simply way too many options! Foundations in every hue and formula. Varying textures of lipstick. Liners in pencil, gel, and liquid form – oh my! But, fret not. There are a few quite simple products and tips you can use to segway into wearing clean, everyday makeup.

Prep: Primer

Prior to applying any type of color to skin, it’s critical to prep the face. After moisturizer (which, contrary to popular belief, is a must-have daily skincare step), primer should be the next product you grab. Think of foundation primers like the base coat that you apply before nail polish: it smoothes the surface, allows the color to be more true, and gives your products longer wear. Have you ever hurriedly painted your nails without a base coat, only to find ridges, chips, and faded color just a few hours later? Primer prevents similar effects from happening to the skin. With it, you’ll find that your foundation and cheek color are easier to apply and last far longer throughout the day. No more wondering where your powder and blush disappeared to by lunch hour.

Application Tip: Apply a dime-sized amount with fingertips over the entire face. Allow product to soak in for a couple minutes before moving on to foundation.

Try: Napoleon Perdis’ “Auto Pilot” Pre-Foundation Skin Primer, Laura Mercier “Foundation Primer”, Smashbox’s “Photo Finish Light” Foundation Primer.

Imperfections: Concealer

Even those with flawless skin will wake up at times with sleepy eyes or an unexpected blemish here and there. On days like this, concealer is our best friend! As we know, concealers come in a variety of colors and formulas, but it is important to select the right product based on your skin type and tone. Those with very oily skin, for example, will want to avoid extra creamy concealers, as they will crease and run throughout the day. We must also consider that each woman may easily need at least two different types of concealer, based on her specific concern. The product that works best at concealing under eye dark circles is not the same product that will be used to conceal acne scars and other blemishes on the face. Under-eye concealers are typically a shade or so lighter than our natural complexion to highlight, and more hydrating for that delicate, thinner skin. Concealers for face tend to be a bit thicker and drier in consistency, and match the skin exactly.

Application Tip: Concealer brushes allow you to be more precise with application, especially under the eye. Sweep product into darker valley beneath the eye, into the tear duct, and directly under the lower lash line. Blend and fade outwards. If necessary, gently use the tip of your ring finger to further dab and blend the product.

Try: M.A.C. “Studio Finish SPF 35″ Concealer, Bobbi Brown “Creamy Concealer”, Estee Lauder “Double Wear Stay-in-Place” Concealer SPF 10, Laura Mercier “Secret Camoflauge” (for skin only – not under-eye)

Skin: Tinted Moisturizer

For those who choose not to wear foundation for fear of looking “too” made-up or cakey, tinted moisturizers are an easy, no-brainer way to even out skin tone. Unlike a full-coverage foundation, tinted moisturizers offer hydration and lightweight, sheer color that still allows your skin to breathe. There are different varieties based on skin type (normal, oily, dry, etc.), and most even offer sun protection as well.

Application Tip: Though you can apply tinted moisturizers with fingers, try using a damp sponge instead. Wet sponge, squeeze out excess water, then apply product. Press and roll sponge into skin and sweep over eyelids (which are often naturally discolored). Because sponges are porous like our skin, they allow product to soak in more naturally without leaving traces or streaks.

Try: Bobbi Brown Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15, Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20, Stila “Sheer Color” Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20

Setting: Translucent Powder

Translucent setting powders are the perfect way to finish off the look after applying face makeup. As the name indicates, these powders are sheer and colorless, and come in either pressed or loose form. For oily skin types, try using a matte pressed powder, which will absorb oil and reduce shine throughout the day. Press into the skin with a velour puff and dust away any excess. Regular skin types may prefer a loose powder applied with a fluffy brush. Those with dry skin may be skeptical of powders in general, but there are several illuminating powders that, when applied with a duo-fiber finishing brush, can create the illusion of dewiness and luminescence.

Application Tip: To avoid leaving traces of powder on deeper skin tones, be sure to tap excess product off of the brush or sponge prior to application. Also, don’t forget to set under-eye concealer! Pat translucent powder beneath the eye to avoid pesky creasing and smearing.

Christmas has become a rather anxious time of the year. A time when most people spend a lot, worry about if he can afford gifts and sometimes their stress carries on after Christmas when they've over spent or rack up a hefty credit card bill.

I've found a lot of sites are reporting on affordable pressies and stocking fillers so don't be afraid to research and shop around online as well for savings.

If you're like me, I'd suggest keep gift giving, especially the more expensive gifts to a minimum or even save it for birthdays. I'd suggest focussing on the time spent on day-have lunch/dinner with the family-immediate or extended or have the friends round on the lead up to Christmas and for those of us with religious persuasions, why don't we attend Christmas service.

Remember, although Christmas was founded on pegan holidays and over the centuries has become blurred an tainted with commercialisation, make it a time you spend with those important to you, and if your religious, take time to commemorate the birth of the baby who would become the man who would become a Saviour.

DIY: tumeric facial masks

I don't usually post beauty tips on the blog but there is a first for everything. On a quest to find more "natural" ingredients that I can use in my home I've stumbled upon this refreshing face mask. Ive grown weary of the Nivea and Clearsil treatments and thought I'd give this a go.

There are a few variations of this facial treatment that use the spice tumeric as a base. One uses tumeric and cucumber, another uses Tumeric, Sandlewood and Curd but the one I've tried combines Tumeric with honey, milk and basic plain flour.

Beginning with about a teaspoon of tumeric powder, I add two to three times the amount of plain flour and stir in some honey (a tablespoon) and milk. I usually stir this in until I get a smooth paste. I then apply it on to my face leaving out my eyes of course and wait forabout 10 minutes before washing it off.

The course texture of the flour and tumeric works as a gentle exfoliate to cleanse the skin. Once the paste is rinsed off, the result is a cool, refreshing and glowing face.

POMIO women expressed shock before the SABL inquiry in Kokopo yesterday when told they were signatories to the lease-lease back agreement.
They were in even more shock to learn that some of the signatories were their own children who were so young they would not even hold up an ink pen.
SABL Commission of Inquiry commissioner Alois Jerewai expressed concern at the findings which is hearing into four SABL leases in Pomio which involve Gilford Limited, a subsidiary of Rimbunan Hijau, the owners of The National newspaper.
Mr Jerewai said it appeared the documents involved in securing the SABLs were flawed.
He questioned the Land Investigation Report used to supplement the SABL leases.
Mr Jerewai heard from Pomio women leaders Claudia Koisilele and Ludwina Kora that they had never signed any agreement giving their land away. (read on here)

Google to end support for BlackBerry Gmail app this month (SOURCE 1) (SOURCE 2)

Google has already made quite a few significant cuts to services it's deemed outside of its focus in the past few months, and it's now made another that surely won't please a particular subset of its users. It's announced that it will end support of the Gmail app for BlackBerry phones on November 22nd. Those that have the app installed will be able to continue using it indefinitely, but it will no longer be supported by Google or available for download after the cut-off date (so you might want to grab it now if you don't already have it). In its place, Google is directing BlackBerry users to the mobile web app accessible through the browser, and it notes that it will "continue investing in this area."

World's Largest Diamond Ring to go to auction

Google is continuing to add new features to its Google+ social network as it tries to upset the Facebook dominance in the online social service realm. The search giant just announced that it’s improving the Google+ integration of two of its other popular products – the YouTube video sharing service and the Chrome browser.

You’ll notice a new YouTube button at the top right of your Google+ page. Once you move your mouse over it a search field will pop up and you can look for a video to play. The video itself plays in a pop-up window, but you get the controls for it right on the Google+ page so you don’t need to switch tabs all the time.

As for the Chrome part, there are now two new extensions to the Chrome browser. You get the +1 button extension, which lets you +1 any page you are browsing and easily share it with your circles. There’s also the Notifications extension, which lets you check your Google+ notifications from anywhere on the web.

Designed as a concept by University of Sydney start-up SDigital, special coaster-like "brand stickers" affixed to eatery "brand tables" would relay fast-food menus to mobile phones via NFC. Hungry, hungry humans would then make their selections, order up and receive a vibrating notification when the food's ready. It's a contactless payment solution not unlike the QkR platform MasterCard demoed for us last month. J. Cole released the video for his song Lost Ones off his debut album Cole World. Directed by BB Gun, the video was made before signed he got a record deal and features a younger Cole and his girlfriend arguing whether or not to keep their child. *sorry folks-gotta visit youtube to peep the vid*

The video and song reminded me a lot of Common's Retrospect for Life. I felt it did what it was supposed do-provide visuals for a song. I must say though, both songs provided slightly different view points on pregnancy, young mums/paps to be, abortion, growing up without a father and relationships.

While we wait until 27 October for Aussie details, Motorola will launch the Razr in the US tomorrow, and the official photo of the handset has surfaced.The image shows the Razr from several angles, revealing its slim body with its chunky top end, housing the phone's camera, presumably. Domestic violence is a tragic reality for two-thirds of women in Papua New Guinea, but the issue is largely left unquestioned and rarely discussed in public.

That changed this week, after the shocking case of a woman who was repeatedly abused by her policeman husband sparked uproar.

The case of Joy Wartovo prompted Papua New Guineans to turn to social media, a recent phenomenon in PNG, to express their outrage and demand police action.

The mother of two went public late last year with a harrowing tale of years of abuse at the hands of her policeman husband Simon Bernard.

A photo in the Post-Courier newspaper at the time showed her nursing broken fingers caused by hammer blows and burns from an iron.

Soon afterwards Bernard was dismissed from the police force and charged with assault.

The story faded until this week, when Ms Wartovo was hospitalised with multiple stab wounds allegedly inflicted by her husband.

It turned out that Bernard had not been prosecuted for the earlier assault and was even being protected by former colleagues in the police.

Effrey Dademo from the advocacy group Act Now! says the case has prompted women to turn to social media to speak out.

Ms Dademo is an administrator of a Facebook group that was set up this week called Papua New Guineans against Domestic Violence.

In just a few days it has attracted nearly 5,000 supporters - that is nearly 10 per cent of all Facebook users in PNG.

"Most of those people on the page are women who have been victims at one point in time," Ms Dademo said.

"Because the page was set up and inspired by the situation that Joy has gone through, I think that kind of gave it a personal touch and people kind of related to the issue.

"I think it's just mere frustration. It's come to a point where really nothing has been done about violence against women and children in general and right now people are outraged by the situation with Joy."

Many men have also joined the Facebook group.

One even urged others to shave their hair and beards as a sign of opposition to domestic violence.

Metropolitan Superintendant Joseph Tondop says the public outcry has put pressure on police to find Bernard.

But the pressure does not seem to have translated into vigorous action.

"We have invited him to come to the police station but he has refused and chooses to be on the run so as we speak he's still on the run," Superintendant Tondop said.

"We actually picked him up two or three weeks ago. Police were interviewing him, he just walked out and then disappeared."

At the very least Ms Dademo hopes the discussion sparked by Ms Wartovo's plight will help change attitudes towards domestic violence.

"When you see a husband beating up a partner the usual response they give is that 'oh, she's my wife, I married her and a paid bride price so I can treat her the way I want'," she said.

"And we're really hoping that men, especially in PNG, will rise up and take this campaign forward and try to change the mentality of other men."

Living Life: 5 Tips to Quitting Your Job & Still Making A Living

Recently, I decided to quit my very stable, yet stressful as hell, teaching job. Yes, in this economy. After 6 years in the classroom, it just wasn’t what I wanted to do anymore. I wanted to write. But these days–with newspapers and print magazines collapsing left and right–I couldn’t figure out a way to follow my passion without starving to death.

Then, I picked up Barbara J. Winter’s book, How to Make A Living Without A Job, and my mind opened completely up. Halfway through the book I realized that I was holding myself back, not the economy or the fact that glossies are folding. Me.

Because I love you Clutchettes, I’m going to share 5 tips that helped me quit my job, follow my dreams, and still be able to live normally (no starving artist b.s. for me!).

Step 1: Pick…

Many of us have dreams of grandeur. We want to write the next great novel. We want to travel around the world. We want to learn underwater basket-weaving. Whatever. One of the first steps to breaking out of a job you hate is to pick something you LOVE doing. Think about something you’d do even if you didn’t get paid for it. For me, that was writing. For you, it might be totally different.

Step 2: Work with what you got…

Once you’ve picked your niche, assess your skills. What are you good at? What talents do you have? List them all out, now search for ways you can turn those into money makers. For writers, we can churn out press releases, write website copy, work for news organizations, and basically do anything relating to the written word. Perhaps you are very tech savvy. The market for graphic designers, coders, and tech consultants is booming. Figure out your talents and exploit them for YOUR benefit, not someone else’s.

Step 3: Think outside of the box…

In her book, Barbara Winter says we need to ditch the idea of a “good” job versus a “bad” job. Many will see teaching as a good job, but might view tutoring, or working at Starbucks, or being a plumber as a “bad” job. Winter reminds us there are no such things as good and bad jobs. If you love what you do–despite the money you make–it is a good job and you’ll feel more fulfilled doing it.

Step 4: Run the numbers…

Before you quit your job, you need to figure out JUST how much money you need to get by. In my case, I taught full time and freelanced on the side, so I was generating a healthy amount of extra income. However, at the end of the month I was still scrounging around in my purse looking for change. Why? The more money I made, the more I spent on random things. I thought I couldn’t quit my job because I’d be broke. I felt trapped and hopeless. After reading Winter’s book I decided to actually run the numbers and list out all of my obligations (rent, bills, son’s tuition, car payment, savings, etc.). What I found was that I didn’t need NEARLY as much money as I thought I did. This gave me hope and helped me to realize that I could easily make it on my freelance income if I just cut back on frivolous spending. By knowing exactly what I needed I no longer felt trapped, I felt empowered.

Step 5: Generate multiple streams of income…

This step is key. Many time we think we want to do one thing and one thing only, but don’t know how we’ll make ends meet. As I mentioned before freelancing writing is notoriously unpredictable. So, if I was going to quit my job, I knew I needed to supplement my income with other things. Because I’m I was a teacher, tutoring is an easy way for me to make extra money while I write. If you have a college degree, or better yet, a teaching credential, you can make upward of $30-$45 an hour tutoring. So, even though I’ll have to get out of my PJs and leave my desk, it won’t be for the entire day. While I build my rep as a writer (doing what I LOVE), I can still make a substantial income on the side doing what I’m good at. It’s the best of both worlds.

I read this book back in 2007 while I was in Wellington. I stumbled across it and found that I couldn't put it down.

I'm not too sure if this part one of our course books or whether I read it on my my own accord but I enjoyed it.

I hope to borrow it sometime soon for a reread.

News correspondent and renonwned media historian Eric Burns tells of Ben Franklin, Alexander Hamilton and Sam Adams—the leading journalists among the Founding Fathers; of George Washington and John Adams, the leading disdainers of journalists; and Thomas Jefferson, the leading manipulator of journalists. These men and the writers who abused and praised them in print (there was, at the time, no job description of "journalist") included the incendiary James Franklin, Ben's brother and one of the first muckrakers; the high minded Thomas Paine; the hatchet man James Callender, and a rebellious crowd of propagandists, pamphleteers, and publishers. Nokia's been playing catch up lately (the release of Symbian Belle, releasing the N9, etc) in the mobile technology game but you have to admit that the changes are welcome for Nokia loyalists. One of their newer services which I am surprised that hasn't gotten a mention in their Nokia Conversations blog is their App Wizard. Whilst it is pretty basic, it works for us non-developers. Much like your PC wizards, the wizard is simple enough to follow and lets you have your own personal app-how bout an app which displays feed updates from all your frequented blogs? After my move to Brisbane, I've found that I've actually left over 3000 songs that I've downloaded over a period of 5 years. I've gone about trying to recollect the music from memory but I know I'll miss a lot and will no doubt have to get my sister to send me my discs of mp3s and transfer a bulk of which were on the family computer. This is one of those songs that I thought I had brought with me, but didn't.

Long story short I just had to post this song which always takes me back to my days in Wellington. This was the most "me time" I've ever had as you may realise, the period of which a number of my posts were done-I was a student with lots of free time on my hands. I had also read the most books during this time (besides my course prescribed texts) all of which I found from searching through the library at length but I'll save this for another post ;)

Learn to build your life around your person, not your role, otherwise when your role changes you'll lose your sense of worth. Being a good mother is a noble calling. It's also a self-sacrificing job. But when your children leave home and those demands are over, it's easy to feel like Naomi did. Her name meant my joy. But after her two sons died she changed her name to Mara, which means bitterness.

Don't allow changing times to change who you are, or to make you stop dreaming and give up hope. God still had a lot for Naomi to do. In the future she would mentor Ruth, who would give birth to a son who was destined to grow up and become part of the lineage of King David and our blessed Lord. What an honour! When your role changes, remember that your life's not over. See your own worth as a person, discover your next assignment, gather up your assets and keep on living and giving. Don't develop a 'Mara mentality'. She allowed herself to become cynical when her circumstances changed; don't let that happen to you!

Discouragement often comes when we feel like we've seen it all, heard it all, done it all, and most of it was bad. No matter how old you are, you can never say you've seen it all. God can do '...exceeding abundantly above all that [you] ask or think...' (Ephesians 3:20). You don't know what God will do with your life before it's over. He has a way of saving the best for last.

Noel Gourdin (pronounced Gor-deen). When I first heard him I though to myself his voice sounds like D'Angleo and Jaheim rolled into one. Guess you can understand why his website describes him as "a man who is city to the heart but southern to the soul" because his music is soul with urban influences.

I first came across him on clutchmagonline.com where I heard his song "beautiful". Its a nice, appreciative song without being cheesy.

Contrary to what I thought he is about to release his second album titled Fresh: The Definition

I find his music a refrshing and something that RnB has been missing of late as more and moe artists trend toward the euro dance movement/sound. More than that, you can appreciate his lyrical ability.

His most notable hit to date is The River which reached number one on the US RB charts in 2008. The single came off his debut album After My Time. He is currently signed to Mass Appeal Entertaiment. Another notable song is The One-one of my personal favourites.

J. Cole promises no more hold ups

J. Cole is finally gearing up for the release of his debut album, promising fans that there will be "no more hold up." Speaking at a press conference for the 2011 BET Awards, Cole said he was preparing to get deep into the promotional cycle with the release of an as-yet-untitled new single.

"Now it's time," he said. "I always had the material for the album. The hold-up was always picking the right single. I think we knew that there was so much on the line and the potential that I had, so we were kind of hesitant.... [Now,] there's no more hold up."

Sony resuming PlayStation Network

Sony has said it began a phased restoration of its PlayStation Network games service on a country by country basis and expected the process to be complete by May 31.

The PlayStation Network, which enables PlayStation games console owners to download games and pit their skills against rivals, has been offline since April 19, after Sony discovered hackers had breached security and accessed personal details on 77 million accounts.

It shut down the network and its Qriocity online music and movie service, frustrating many users, but later found out that a separate online games service had also been accessed, forcing a further shutdown.

I got this in an email to day and I just had to share it.

"A little boy asked his mother, "Why are you crying?" "Because I'm a woman , " she told him.

"I don't understand , " he said. His Mom just hugged him and said , "And you never will."

Later the little boy asked his father ,"Why does mother seem to cry for no reason?"

"All women cry for no reason," was all his dad could say.

The little boy grew up and became a man , still wondering why women cry...

Finally he put in a call to God. When God got on the phone , he asked , "God , why do women cry so easily?"

I'd envisaged the hot flushes.
I'd even anticipated the urge to have a sleep on the Campbell Live couch.
What I hadn't expected was to be seeing stars dancing about my desk and hearing snippets of Jimi Hendrix songs wafting about the office.
I glanced around to see where that ghostly rendition of Purple Haze was coming from, but couldn't see past the shimmering rainbow over by the photocopier. Then it hit me - I was in the clammy grip of food-related delirium.
Maybe it was time for that lie-down.
An hour earlier I'd been working my way through KFC's notorious Double Down burger, part of a crack-team of chicken-eaters who were prepared for a calorific head-trip in the name of entertainment.

There are a whole lot of sites and downloadable applications that come in handy. I thought I would make a list to share-you know dissemination of information and all that :-)

1. AVS Video Converter
A colleague of mine was kind enough to share some movies with me and I have my dvd player plays from usb flash drives but however I needed to convert the movies into .avi in order to convert them. I've had trouble using VLC to convert these files and AVS Video Converter made things so much easier. YOU can also convert files so that they are compatible for playback/accessible on you phone, etc.You will have to pay a registration fee though (the last time I checked you had to).

2. Twitterfeed.com
I signed up for a twitter account for his blog and I didnt want to maually keep updating the post updates into twitter. This site will directly feed any updates you have into you twitter account to notify your followers of new posts.

3. Snaptu
I have a Nokia phone and I was looking for an all in one application for when I need to tweet or facebook on the go. This app is quite useful if you don't have the inbuilt social networking apps for iphones/blackberrys. I especially like this one because I don't have to keep signing in to my facebook/twitter accounts and I can manage both my twitter accounts (my personal one and the blog accounts)

4. Tweet Deck
One look at the site and you know you have to download it.

Timothy Allen's Human Planet Photos

Waiting for my latte this morning, I came across this image on the front cover of this month's issue of Redbull Magazine. Several google searches later and I found that the images were taken as part of a BBC documentary titled Human Planet and features the photos of Timothy Allen. Allen not to be confused with American comedian/actor of the same name, is best "known for his work with indigenous peoples and isolated communities around the world."

In 2008, the BBC commissioned Allen to shadow its film crews during the shooting of the documentary project Human Planet. This was the first time that the BBC had employed a dedicated stills photographer on a landmark series. He spent over a year and a half travelling with 4 teams, covering stories of human endeavour in over forty countries around the world. The resulting imagery was published in a best-selling BBC book, formed an exhibition and was used in the program's worldwide branding and publicity. (source). The documentary is currently being screened at 8pm on the Discovery Channel on Sunday nights (see here for listings)

His top 40 round up features a lovely picture of of PNG's most recognisable tribal groups- the huli wigmen, in this case the little boy in the picture stole the show

I've noticed many give their children just K2 (K1 = 36 US cents). The K2 that the child gets is to travel to and fro school and that costs about K1. So the child has only K1 for lunch.

Many of these children don't even have breakfast before going to school.

My kid brother came back from his school social and after a quick discussion I realised that no matter what your generation, there is/are always that/those song/s you will subconsciously know and sing along to.
If you're a Kiwi, or have lived in NZ, I reckon these are the unofficial anthems/modern "folk" songs that you will know:

The Exponents-Why does love do this to me
Released in 1992, the song is still doing the rounds and can often be heard in night spots. It has been used in recent years in an Air New Zealand ad campaign as well as for the 2007 Rugby.

Southside of Bombay- What's the time Mr Wolf
Although the song was released in 1992, it was given a fresh breath of life in 1994 when it was featured in Once were warriors.

Patea Maori Club- Poi'e
Released in 1984 (before I was born,it stuns me to say) the song was the biggest selling single that year in New Zealand. The song had a very interesting video comprising elements of hip-hop culture-break dancing and rapping. This song was also featured in last year's movie hit Boy (which is now the highest grossing NZ film).

Since my return from PNG, I have realised that I am spiritually running on empty. When I was at my most focussed and "on the up" I was in the last couple of years in high school and I was actively refuelling my spiritual tank with prayer and reading the bible and attending church and mass (I went to a Catholic high school).

Living in the "white man's world" it can be so easy to get caught up and lose sight of where you're headed. Long story short- I've felt a strong urge to go to church and just listen and absorb the weekly sermons/teachings and just try to discern where to go from this stagnant phase of my life.

These past two weeks, firstly, we had Pastor Peter Mortlock speak about the sowing of the seeds for miracles and of the prayer over those seeds. This week, the guest speaker, Pastor Patrick Ondrey talked about Possessing Your Future.

These two sermons spoke greatly to me as someone who is stuck in a rutt-career wise and life wise and I received a kick in the backside cos I came to see that I need to make some changes in order for me to progress. Pastore Patrick spoke about the 6 Laws of Possessing Your Future and he listed them in the following order:

1. The Cut
2. The Fill
3. The Beyond
4, The Shut
5 The Open
6. The Move

Its gonna hit me like a tonne of bricks when I step off that plane.

Its never good going home, when your purpose is to say goodbye and even more so when the death was avoidable.

Precious are the breaths we draw and the moments we spend with loved ones. When they go so suddenly-damn its unbearable. In rush in the whys, hows and blame game but pouring over the sequence of moments leading up to that time-cannot alter that state of the present.

This is sending my world reeling. Its doesn't feel like you're gone Pat and I don't want to come back knowing you won't be there.

I'm taking a deep breath and biding my time till I land in Pom and reality sets in...

On Tuesday 22nd Feburary 2011, Keegan Willams passed away. He was a son, nephew, friend, flat mate, boyfriend. This guy was full of life, bursting with energy and talent and it was only three weekends ago that they he and friends had been looking for, of all things a hack saw so that they could cut a lock from a boat and go out fishing.

I didn't know you very well but the one time I saw you, I recall this bright smile and wave you gave when we drove Harry by your house last year. In that single moment I saw a glimpse of the person your were and for me I felt this was someone you had to meet and kick it with, at least once so that you can soak a up a little bit of their aura. I'm saddened that I did not get to do that.

Gone too soon is simply the thought that comes to mind when I think about you. And its in moments like this that I am suddenly reminded of the fragility of life and the realness of the saying "tomorrow is not promised".

Your passing has taught me, if anything, to be thankful of the days I have, to bask in the presence of my loved ones, to remind them that I love them and most of all to carry myself with at least a fraction of the positive energy you had.

You'll be missed Keegan.
Rest in eternal peace in the Lord's arms.

The idea was simple: Let’s take four of the nation’s best high school athletes and turn them into video game characters. And let’s get one of the best comic book and video game artists in the world to help us do it.

Enter Alvin Lee, a Toronto native who made his name drawing Street Fighter comics and Capcom video games and has also worked on famous franchises like the Fantastic Four and X-Men for Marvel Comics.

We then created secret identities for the four senior athletes, though the truth is they already seem like superheroes: Jadeveon Clowney is the nation’s top football recruit, an unstoppable defensive end who has been compared to Julius Peppers; Michael Gilchrist is the rare elite basketball recruit who is as motivated defensively as he is talented offensively; Nick Vena is a record smashing powerhouse and arguably the top prep shot putter in history; and Daniel Norris is the best baseball prospect in the country, a southpaw who is virtually unhittable thanks to his combination of power and finesse.

I'm a couple of weeks late with this post but better late-ish than never. Both groups are based in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea and they're styles are a blend of rap, reggae and RnB.
