Earth Hour Papua New Guinea

This year, Earth Hour will be going global. Earth Hour began in Sydney 2007 and has progressively gained support over within the last year. This year's goal is for 1 billion people to switch off their lights in a effort to create a movement to work toward slowing down global warming.

A quick glance at the map featured on Earth Hour.Org and you will see that even Papua New Guinea will be taking part in the event.

  1. Thanks for promoting Earth Hour! Another way you can recruit people to the cause is by creating a Earth Hour group on Commit21.com. Simply create a group about one action that you will commit to do for Earth Hour and recruit your friends, family, and co-workers to get involved in that action as well. When it comes to climate change, simple actions can make huge differences and Commit21 leverages social media to influence networks of friends, family, and co-workers. Check it out at www.commit21.com

  2. Some of these concepts such as Earth hour are feelgood moevements for those in the west to part take in an activity that givess them sense of doing something for a planet that has largely been abused for there advantage.

Personally, I think PNG has contributed more then its fair share to the earth hour movement, thanks to the inefficieny of PNG Power, so it should not do anymore. 90% of the population already live by kero/fire light

Since i live in the developed west, i will live by candle light for the 1 hr. but if i was in PNG NO WAY!

  3. I get where you're comming from Weast, it did cross my mind that enough blackouts occur in PNG to count towards a contribution to Earth Hour but I also think its a great way to get involved in something global.
I myself will be switching off my lights this Saturday as part of Auckland's conribution.

  4. Illaine,

Lucky I saw this article AFTER Earth Hour - or else I would have verbally desecrated all over it.

I tend to agree with what Weast has said already. Honestly, Earth Hour really annoys me - i just feel like punching whoever came up with the idea, you know that kind of feeling? That's the kind of feeling I get when people talk about Earth Hour.

Ok, so for one glorious hour in a year, we all stop using electricity and save power. WOW. Cool. So we go to bed, wake up the next day - drive ourselves to work in our fuel-combustion machines - use our money to support the productions of plastics and every other retail item, and talk about how we saved one hours worth of energy. Hmmmm...

The best thing about Earth Hour is the hope it provides. Realistically - it's an hour wasted of not using electricity. Why? Well, personally, I think we're already over the edge - we've gone past the tipping point and saving one hour a year is negligible on the outcome.

But maybe the hope it provides is worth it?

P.S: I just added you to my blog list. This whole time I thought I had you on my roll but I hadn't! So sorry - hopefully you get some hits via T&D.
