Artist Spotlight: Noel Gourdin

Noel Gourdin (pronounced Gor-deen). When I first heard him I though to myself his voice sounds like D'Angleo and Jaheim rolled into one. Guess you can understand why his website describes him as "a man who is city to the heart but southern to the soul" because his music is soul with urban influences.

I first came across him on clutchmagonline.com where I heard his song "beautiful". Its a nice, appreciative song without being cheesy.



Contrary to what I thought he is about to release his second album titled Fresh: The Definition

I find his music a refrshing and something that RnB has been missing of late as more and moe artists trend toward the euro dance movement/sound. More than that, you can appreciate his lyrical ability.


His most notable hit to date is The River which reached number one on the US RB charts in 2008. The single came off his debut album After My Time. He is currently signed to Mass Appeal Entertaiment. Another notable song is The One-one of my personal favourites.

Rising Icons: J.Cole

I'm itching to hear his début album and The Warm Up is one of the most played rap albums (its actually a mix-tape but I reckon its good enough to be a album)that I've listened to since The Game's The Documentary.

I like his story telling ability and that he is not your bubble gum/dope selling/all about yo paper "rapper". His style kinda reminds me of Tupac,Nas,Common. Aside from this he is a breath of fresh air in the stagnant pool of rap and I can't wait for his album Cole World.

Anyways, after an evening prowling youtube for some new music I was glad to come across this BET special so check it out to get a glimpse of the artist.

Fresh Tunes: Jay Z DOA (death of autotune)

I love hiphop-well when rappers wrote good, smart, witty ryhmes and when they come out with well written songs. WIth some of the silly wannabes out there right now (I am ANTI soldier boy) I am keen to see how Jay Z fares with the album he'll be releasing. Jay Z is set to release The Blueprint 3 in September and I know I'm hella late with catching on to this song but I must say that I appreciate that he's changed up the production going for a band sound with little trace of produced music and he sounds good lyrically.

My favourite line in the song has to be: "I know we in a recession but the music that ya'll makin gon make it the Great Depression" Having him rap in front of the band reminds me of the MTV Unpluged session he did back in 2001 with The Roots and Angie Stone etc.

Good music

Its been a tough week for me hence the slow posts but I'm gonna get nostalgic with my music and play some Tupac. He wasn't just a gangsta rapper to me. For me some of his songs are poetic and timeless. Songs like Brenda's got a baby, Wonder Why They Call You Bitch, Dear Mama, Keep you head up, Changes spoke to me and I apprecieated what they meant.

My brother's Strictly for my NIGGAZ, All Eyes on me and 2Pacalypse Now were never played out for me, even if there was a fair amount of profanity in there. I'd sit back and play back some songs just so I could learn the lyrics.

If asked who I'd list as the greatest hiphop artist of all time, I'd say it was Tupac.

Dear Mama (1995)


Considered one of the greatest hiphop songs of all time. This was dedicated to his mother. Its a great song. You can't deny he wrote well and this song is a testament to that.
