J. Cole promises no more hold ups

 J. Cole is finally gearing up for the release of his debut album, promising fans that there will be "no more hold up." Speaking at a press conference for the 2011 BET Awards, Cole said he was preparing to get deep into the promotional cycle with the release of an as-yet-untitled new single.

"Now it's time," he said. "I always had the material for the album. The hold-up was always picking the right single. I think we knew that there was so much on the line and the potential that I had, so we were kind of hesitant.... [Now,] there's no more hold up."

There will always be a song or several songs that are ingrained in the culture/s of a nation-aside from national anthems, popular/well know folk songs.

My kid brother came back from his school social and after a quick discussion I realised that no matter what your generation, there is/are always that/those song/s you will subconsciously know and sing along to.

Check out the latest video from M.I.A. “There’s Space For Ol Dat I See” (Space Odyssey). M.I.A. posted the new video via her Twitter last Tuesday. According to The Fader, it’s a protest song against the New York Times article, The 31 Places to Go in 2010, that listed Sri Lanka as the #1 place to visit in 2010. “Space Odyssey” should be on her forthcoming album, which is set to drop this summer.

Apperantly: Space Odyssey was quickly written and recorded Monday night for $100, in response to a New York Times story, the artists publicist tells The Fader. Space Odyssey, produced by M.I.A. and Rusko, will likely appear on M.I.A.s upcoming third studio album.

Thanks to Labelle's Canvas, I came across this video of Ryan Leslie at work. Boy was I impressed. Its amazing how producers like Timbaland and Brian Michael Cox as well as Ryan Leslie can put together music and give us hits like The Way I are, We Need A Resolution, U got it Bad, Be Without You and Me and You (I mentioned the only the song titles because most of you already know who the artists are)

Good music

Its been a tough week for me hence the slow posts but I'm gonna get nostalgic with my music and play some Tupac. He wasn't just a gangsta rapper to me. For me some of his songs are poetic and timeless. Songs like Brenda's got a baby, Wonder Why They Call You Bitch, Dear Mama, Keep you head up, Changes spoke to me and I apprecieated what they meant.

My brother's Strictly for my NIGGAZ, All Eyes on me and 2Pacalypse Now were never played out for me, even if there was a fair amount of profanity in there. I'd sit back and play back some songs just so I could learn the lyrics.

If asked who I'd list as the greatest hiphop artist of all time, I'd say it was Tupac.

Dear Mama (1995)


Considered one of the greatest hiphop songs of all time. This was dedicated to his mother. Its a great song. You can't deny he wrote well and this song is a testament to that.

Finding Marvin Gaye

Today I started reading TROUBLE MAN: The Life and Death of Marvin Gaye by Steve Turner.
His was a tragic death and my knowledge of him at present is refined to a page on wikipedia and a handful of his songs that I enjoy ( got to give it up, what's going on, sexual healing, ain't no mountain high).

I'm some twenty pages in and already a sense of sadness, disappointment and doom is setting in as Turner lays out the foundations that would shape Gaye and be the source of his troubles. I am reluctant to read on in the fear that my idealistic vision of him will be tainted. "To know the artist, you've got to look beyond his music" . That's the thought that's burning in the back of my mind which is why I'll reluctantly read on tonight.
