Somare sails in deep water

PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare has a shareholding in a ship safety certification company despite publicly denying his interest in Parliament.
“I do not have any shareholding in PRS (Pacific Register of Ships) and therefore have no reason to disclose anything to the Ombudsman Commission,” he told Parliament early this month when responding to questions by Opposition Leader Sir Mekere Morauta.

But company registration details obtained from the Investment Promotion Authority (IPA) show Sir Michael is one of five shareholders of Pacific Register of Ships Limited (PRS). He holds the share “in trust for the Independent State of PNG”. continue reading

Somare's got a lot of skeletons in his closet and its seems they're coming out this spring for cleaning. I wonder what else one would find if he/she dug deeper.

Throwback track

I'm declaring it Jagged Edge Week here on The Vent.

If I had to name one of my personal favourite male groups, these guys would rank number one. Why? Well mostly because they are the only male group I have consistently listened to and downloaded music from since I heard I got it and Let's Get Married. I like everything from their slow jams to their up beat rnb tracks. I mean who cannot get psyched, even just a lil bit when they here "where the party at?".

So in accordance with this declaration I'll be digging into the archives and pulling out one of their songs to play everyday of the week so keep checking in. Holla if you have any requests and I will try to post it up.

Jagged Edge- let's get married (2000)

some good ol RnB for a chilled Sunday. Enjoy Folks

A day in the life: how hard it is for a young, dark female

Last year I sourced an article from Clutch Magazine online- Degree=job??? and the more I am able to count the weeks passing without success in getting a job at graduate or entry level, the more I realise how hard success is to
achieve.
Here I am, two months away from holding my formal qualification in my hands and the fact is, it may not mean squat. Why? Well now more than ever, competition for jobs is extremely high and coming off the mark with two strikes against me (gender and ethnicity) makes it less easy for to get where I want to be.

Trawling through job adverts in my chosen field (journalism, PR, media, publishing, and likes) leaves one a little disheartened when a minimum of 6 months experience is a requirement and all I have is countless assignment work (which I doubt counts as experience), the voluntary work I've done for my student association, my work experience in fields besides the one I am now choosing.

Looking back I admit I screwed up when I chose not to seek out intern opportunities or taking the chance to write articles for the campus magazine (even if I thought it was bogus I should have written something I guess). In my defence, I was young, dumb and ill advised as to what my options were.

So where to from my present state of joblessness? The pages of seek.co.nz, the situations vacant columns of the North Shore Times and a 75 per cent chance of a starter career in fashion retail.

Aussies to release wording of apology

The exact wording of the Australian Federal Governments apology to the Stolen Generation will be revealed in federal parliament after 7pmNZT, just hours before Prime Minister Kevin Rudd gets to his feet in the House of Representatives tomorrow to deliver the long-awaited apology.

Mr Rudd said the government was trying to balance the expectations of the opposition with those of indigenous people.

"Remember who our audience is, which is indigenous people, (who want) to have an apology registered with them through the parliament," he said. An apology to the Stolen Generation was one of Rudd's promises that he said he would fulfil when elected into government. continue reading

New discovery in battle against AIDS

Researchers have found another handle that the AIDS virus uses to attack cells, and said this one may explain how it gets into the gut, where it hides out and multiplies for a full assault on the body.

The handle is a cell receptor, and its discovery could open new ways to fight the fatal and so far incurable virus, the team at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases reported on Sunday. continue reading

Last Man Standing

After returning from Brisbane and slowly adjusting back to NZ television, I would nonchalantly skip past the episodes of Last Man Standing that were saved on our MySKY
decoder. That was until last night when I watch the final episode which took place in PNG (in fact this was one of two events which took place in PNG, the other was Trobriend Cricket). The series follows 6 contenders who compete for the title of last man standing by taking part in in a series of ancient sporting festivals around the
world.

Week 1: Kalapalo Wrestling

Week 2: Zulu Stick Fighting

Week 3: Mexican Endurance Running

Week 4: Nagaland kickboxing

Week 5: Mongolian wrestling

Week 6: Trobriand cricket

Week 7: Wolof wrestling

Week 8: Sepik canoe racing

Unfortunately I was only able to find the opening titles for the series

Check out LAST MAN STANDING for the episode guide and clips
